New Zealand offers several distinct pathways to residence, and two of the most common are the Skilled Migrant Category and the Active Investor Plus Visa. They’re built for very different circumstances, and understanding which one actually fits yours is the first step to a realistic immigration strategy.
The Skilled Migrant Category
The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) remains New Zealand’s main pathway for professionals seeking residence based on their qualifications, work experience, and a job offer or ongoing skilled employment in New Zealand. It’s generally assessed against a points-based framework, weighing factors like age, qualifications, and skilled work experience.
- Best suited to: qualified professionals with an offer of skilled employment, or those already working in a skilled role in New Zealand
- Typically requires: a genuine job offer or current skilled employment, and meeting the relevant points threshold
The Active Investor Plus Visa
The Active Investor Plus Visa is New Zealand’s primary investor residence pathway, replacing the earlier Investor 1 and Investor 2 categories. According to Immigration New Zealand, it offers two investment categories — Growth, requiring a minimum NZD $5 million investment, and Balanced, requiring a minimum NZD $10 million investment — each with different investment terms and requirements.
- Best suited to: experienced investors able to meet the minimum investment thresholds, who want a pathway that isn’t dependent on a job offer
- Typically requires: proof of investment funds, a minimum time commitment to New Zealand, and investments that meet the acceptable categories
There’s also a separate Business Investor Visa pathway for those planning to actively establish and run a business in New Zealand, rather than take a more passive investment approach — a different fit again from both the SMC and the Active Investor Plus Visa.
Key Differences at a Glance
- Basis for residence — SMC is based on skills and employment; Active Investor Plus is based on capital investment
- Job offer requirement — required for most SMC applicants; not required for Active Investor Plus
- Financial threshold — none for SMC beyond standard costs; a multi-million-dollar minimum investment for Active Investor Plus
- Time in New Zealand — SMC applicants typically need to be working here; Active Investor Plus has its own minimum stay requirements tied to the investment category
Which Pathway Should You Pursue?
If you have in-demand skills and a genuine job offer or are already working in New Zealand, the Skilled Migrant Category is usually the more direct and cost-effective route. If your position is built around capital rather than a specific job — for example, as a business owner or investor — the Active Investor Plus Visa or Business Investor Visa may be a better fit. Many people considering the investor route are also weighing up broader wealth and structuring questions — our guide on what asset protection is is a useful next read if that applies to you.
