Business Immigration to New Zealand: A Guide for Vietnamese Entrepreneurs

business immigration New Zealand Vietnam

Vietnam’s rapidly growing economy has produced a generation of ambitious entrepreneurs and investors seeking to expand their business interests internationally. New Zealand — with its transparent legal system, stable political environment, and strong bilateral trade ties — is increasingly emerging as a destination of choice for Vietnamese business immigration.

In recent years, New Zealand has made significant changes to its business immigration settings, making it more accessible for experienced international investors. Understanding these pathways early is essential for Vietnamese nationals who are planning their next move.

According to Immigration New Zealand, the Business Investor Work Visa opened for applications on 24 November 2025, offering a structured pathway for experienced businesspeople to invest in and actively operate established New Zealand businesses.

What Is the Business Investor Work Visa?

The Business Investor Work Visa replaces the previous Entrepreneur Work Visa. It is designed for experienced businesspeople — including Vietnamese investors — who want to purchase and actively manage an established New Zealand business. The visa is valid for up to four years and provides a clear path toward residence.

Two investment options are available:

  • NZD $1 million investment in an established business — leads to a 3-year work-to-residence pathway
  • NZD $2 million investment in an established business — provides a 12-month fast-track to residence

Applicants may purchase a business outright or acquire at least a 25% shareholding, provided the minimum investment threshold is met. Both options allow applicants to include their partner and dependent children.

Key Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Business Investor Work Visa, Vietnamese nationals must meet the following criteria:

  • Business history: The target business must have been operating for at least 5 years
  • Minimum turnover: The business must have an annual turnover of at least NZD $1 million
  • Staffing: The business must employ at least 5 full-time equivalent staff
  • Reserve funds: Applicants must have at least NZD $500,000 in reserve to support themselves and their family
  • Age: Applicants must be aged 55 or under
  • Job creation: At least one new full-time job must be created as a result of the investment
  • English language: An IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent is required
  • Health and character: Standard health and character checks apply

What Businesses Are Eligible?

Not all New Zealand businesses qualify under this visa category. The following business types are excluded:

  • Immigration advisory services businesses
  • Businesses that are primarily passive investments with no active management role
  • Businesses purchased from a Licensed Immigration Adviser

Vietnamese investors should conduct thorough due diligence on any target business before proceeding with a visa application. Legal advice at this early stage can help avoid costly errors.

Pathway to Residence

The Business Investor Work Visa is a work-to-residence pathway, meaning successful applicants will eventually be eligible to apply for the Business Investor Resident Visa. Under the standard (NZD $1 million) pathway, applicants may apply for residence after 3 years of actively running the business. Under the fast-track (NZD $2 million) pathway, residence may be available after 12 months.

To remain on track for residence, investors must continue to own and actively manage their business throughout the qualifying period. The business must also maintain its staffing levels and financial health.

Why Vietnamese Entrepreneurs Are Choosing New Zealand

New Zealand offers several compelling advantages for Vietnamese business immigrants:

  • A stable and transparent legal system that protects investor rights
  • A growing bilateral trade relationship between New Zealand and Vietnam
  • Strong educational options for children and family members
  • A high quality of life, clean environment, and excellent healthcare system
  • Geographic proximity to Asia, making it a practical base for regional business activities

How to Prepare a Strong Application

Visa applications under the Business Investor Work Visa category are assessed on a range of factors, including the quality of the business being acquired, the strength of financial evidence, and the applicant’s business background. A poorly prepared application can result in delays or a declined outcome.

  1. Research eligible businesses that meet the financial and operational requirements
  2. Obtain a business valuation and conduct legal due diligence
  3. Gather evidence of your business experience and ownership of investment funds
  4. Prepare a business plan that demonstrates your intended role and contribution
  5. Ensure all documentation — including English translations — is accurate and complete
